Irvington residents adore their community. Residents have no problem walking to the business district’s superb local eatery options, dentist, eye doctor, coffee shops, bank, clothing and merchandise, a vinyl and book store, bars, yoga, local preschools and a public library. Irvington is located five miles (8 km) east of downtown Indianapolis on the western edge of Warren Township. The neighborhood is situated on Washington Street which is the route of the Historic National Road, a National Scenic Byway. US 40 was formerly routed along the road. In 2022, the IndyGo Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit will be traveling along Washington Street for commuters and visitors.

Families young and old are establishing themselves in Irvington’s tree-lined streets for the walkable and family-friendly amenities. Many of the residents volunteer within Irvington through the various non-profits working to improve Irvington for everyone including the Irvington Garden Club, Irvington Community Council, Irvington Historic Society, the Irvington Development Organization, and at the many church organizations throughout the community.
Irvington is home to Ellenberger Park and the Irving Circle Park which holds the Irvington Farmers Market, concerts, a fountain, a pool, baseball diamonds, trails, and tennis courts. The Pennsy Trail and the Pleasant Run Greenway trail are perfect for those morning runs and leisure walks. Every year, an estimated 60,000 people from across Indianapolis join Irvington in celebrating Halloween with a week-long festival indulging in spooky stories, haunted tours, a 5k race, and ending with the Irvington Halloween Street Fair.
Irvington is the largest locally protected historic district in Indianapolis. The district includes roughly 2,800 buildings and about 1,600 parcels of land. Seventy-eight percent of Irvington homes were built before 1960. As of October 4, 2006, historic landmarks include the Benton House, the Bona Thompson Library, the Masonic Lodge, the George Julian House, and dozens of homes within the historic district.
